CHIROPRACTIC - The McTimoney Way
The McTimoney method of chiropractic
The treatment is a relatively gentle, whole-body form of chiropractic that makes up approximately one third of the profession in the UK. A McTimoney chiropractor corrects misalignments in the spine and other joints, consequently remedying imbalances in soft tissues.
As well as relieving pain, the treatment optimises the health of the nervous system, which is why chiropractic can help with problems that are not directly related to the spine or joints, for example, digestive disorders.
CHIROPRACTIC ALLEVIATES PAIN AND BOOSTS GENERAL HEALTH
What can it help with?
Conditions treated successfully with chiropractic include:
- neck and shoulder problems
- headaches, including migraines
- sciatica (trapped nerves)
- pins and needles or numbness
- lumbago (lower back pain)
- slipped (prolapsed) discs
- hip and pelvic pain
- problems related to pregnancy
- optimising the chances of a 'normal' birth
- infant colic and sleep problems
- children's developmental problems
How long does it take to work?
Recovery depends on the nature and duration of the problem, age and general fitness and commitment to a treatment plan and advice given. An average of 4–6 treatments to begin with is a guide, and improvement is normally seen after 2–3 treatments.
Key aspects of McTimoney chiropractic treatment
GENTLE The adjustments used to correct misalignments are delivered at very high speed with immediate release, making them comfortable to receive.
WHOLE BODY McTimoney chiropractic is an holistic therapy concerned with the welfare of the whole body, not just isolated areas causing pain. If one part of the body is malfunctioning then knock-on effects often arise – hip or pelvic problems, for example, may cause knee pain. A McTimoney chiropractor treats the whole body at each appointment.
THOROUGH A new patient must allow up to an hour-and-a-half for the first appointment, which includes a comprehensive health screening and the first treatment. Follow-up treatments average 30 minutes.
SUITABLE FOR ALL Patients of all ages, including young children and the elderly, can benefit from this gentle treatment. It is particularly suitable for expectant and new mothers.
PREVENTATIVE McTimoney care can prevent problems arising in the first place, and maintenance check-ups are recommended following a course of treatment to avoid future episodes of pain or dysfunction.
SAFE McTimoney adjustments are very safe, largely because a patient’s bones are never forced to move – they are released naturally towards their correct position. Practitioners are trained to recognise serious disease and will make medical referrals when necessary.
REGULATED Chiropractic has been regulated by statute since 1994, and its governing professional body is the General Chiropractic Council. There is now a substantial body of evidenced-based research supporting chiropractic treatment.
